MIKEY DAYS

with Primitive Skateboarding - Part 1

Mikey’s been best friends with P-Rod since they were little tiny skate rats in The Valley, both skating for City Stars. Now older, wiser, and huge names in skateboarding, they still kick it all the time and have the same exact relationship they’ve always had. Here’s the footage of their first session together since Paul launched Primitive Skateboarding.

TRICKIPEDIA TUESDAYS

Trickipedia is not a Trick Tips section, but that doesn't mean you're not going to learn. Trickipedia is the general education page for skateboarding tricks started by the Berrics so that future generations understand the difference between frontside and backside and that there is no such thing as switch nollie half cabs. Each week one of Skateboarding's best will help fill Trickipedia's pages until it is the most comprehensive reference work on the planet. This week Paul Rodriguez adds Bigspin Heelflips to the mix in HD. Watch the original version by Johnny Layton on January 4, 2011. If you have any suggestions of who you would like to see do certain tricks in the future feel free to drop us a line at trickipedia@theberrics.com.

DOUBLE TAPPED

April 18, 2014

So much good skating gets posted everyday on Insta. Some clips are so insanely good that a few years ago, they could've been legitimate video part enders. But the nature of Instagram is to be of the moment—to be instant. As a result, these clips get forever lost in the black hole of Insta's infinite scroll. "Liked" once and forgotten. Double Tapped is our way of slowing down the ever-growing feed to reflect. These are the clips that stood the test of time over the past 7 days and deserve a rewatch. Tag @berrics and hashtag #BerricsDoubleTapped on your Instavids for a chance to get in next week's Double Tapped.

PROCESS

Paul Rodriguez

There's a mindset today, especially in America, whereupon doing things the easy way is doing things the best way. Everyone whose left skin on the concrete or blood on the stairs, or limped to the car after trying a trick for two hours, knows this to be untrue. There is no easy way when filming in the streets, even to the most talented skateboarders we have. Whether it be security, the cops, the run-up, the neighbors, the concrete, the traffic, the pedestrians, your set-up, the rain, sleet or snow, or the fact that you just can't fucking do it, there is always, always, always a process to getting what it is you want so badly. Paul Rodriguez tells us what the process was to getting one of his lines in "Presenting Primitive Skateboarding". Enjoy. -- sb

TRAJECTORY - PRIMITIVE

Part 2

Been wondering what's up with P-Rod's gold boards? Well, here's your answer. In the early 90's a dozen companies, armed with very little money, a lot of hard work and a refusal to fail, rose from the ashes of the recession to become the established brands you know today. Now, in the greatest economic hardship our planet has seen since The Great Depression, it seems history is repeating itself. New companies and new projects are surfacing weekly. Trajectory is our way of introducing to you these initiatives as well as the people who have the courage to throw caution in the wind and not be afraid to have it blow back and hit them square in the teeth. Here is Primitive Skateboarding. -- sb

MTN DEW SXSW

2014

The Mountain Dew skate team hit the road last month for SXSW in Austin, TX. They shredded some street spots, spent time with their fans, made some new fans, and still found the time to shake what their mamas gave them at the Green Label showcase. How do they find the energy?

VHS - PAUL RODRIGUEZ

City Stars - Street Cinema - 2001

“Those were the most magical times for me. The enthusiasm and passion that we all had on the City Stars team was contagious—especially all us younger dudes (known as the “Terror Squad”). We were a genuine family and all we did was skate ... all day everyday with no other responsibilities. Traveling was new to us, so every time we went on a trip we would literally skate all day and night 'til the sun came up ... sleep for a little then do it all over again. I cherish every memory from that era. At the time I didn't want to use Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” because Guy already used it in "Video Days" obviously. It was Kareem's idea and I was oblivious to the statement he was trying to make by choosing that song.” –Paul Rodriguez

AMS IN PHX

Chris Colbourn, Jake Reuter, and Franky Villani are three Ams on the come-up. When you're working your way up to the Pro ranks, it's crucial for you to make a trip to the PHXAM contest. We tagged along on their recent trip, and discovered that another important element to becoming a Pro is being able to just skate EVERYTHING. These dudes can tear it all up: ditches, bowls, and... semi-trucks?!

CANVAS

March 2014

Skateboarders do not make up the majority of the demographic group that is youth culture. You are a minority, but like every great and powerful movement that ever came to be, you/we are becoming an increasingly powerful minority with huge influence over fashion, art and music. But why? Every month we start out with a blank canvas. Day after day we paint that canvas with another color, another shape, another purpose. We don't know what it's going to look like when it's done, but we do know that once we step back and take a look, we'll have our answer as to why something so small has made such big effects on the world. The feeling you get is the feeling you get and there's no other feeling quite like it. So this is the Berrics' canvas for March, different from February before it and for sure April after it. It is the only canvas of its kind. Enjoy. - sb

360 Flips

The aesthetic of the tre flip is a pretty thing. It's something only a handful of people on this planet can do....there was actually a time when it wasn't even a possibility. Then one day some dude named Rodney Mullen said it can be done and did it. Today, it's a staple in the skateboarders arsenal of tricks bag. Here's the thing, and this goes with every trick in that bag- just because you can do the same trick that others can do, doesn't make it the same thing. Every human being is different from one another, mind, body, and spirit. Every skater has their own way of doing the tre flip, making it their own....that's the beauty of being a human being-we're all different but the same, just like the tre flip.
