Week in review weekly skateboard news

WORDS: Stu Gomez

This is your week in skateboarding, through the eyes of The Berrics…

First Try Fridays went down in real time this week, with Mike Mo challenging Koston to a rather imposing trick at the crack of noon (Pacific Standard Time). Thanks to everyone who tuned in! Catch the encore presentation here.

It was a crazy week for 2020 Olympics news: Brazil has announced its riders, and—with Luan, Pedro Barros, and Kelvin Hoefler listed—there were really no surprises there; on the other end of the spectrum, England might not even be participating in the Games due to cash flow issues. The Times broke the news, stating that funding for Skateboard England ended abruptly and now there aren’t any paid employees to carry the torch, so to speak. It would be a shame if the country that gave us Carl Shipman and Alex Moul wasn’t in the Olympics.

A couple of years ago, there was Jart. Now, Playboy is going balls-deep into the skateboard game with a centerfold collection that really gives one pause. The girls are naked. And that’s fine, but if we boardslide them does that make us monsters? Will there be some sickening subtext to the term “lipslide”? We love our queens here at The Berrics, but something about this Playboy booty grab is making us uneasy.

Playboy kinda missed a trick here, though. A better play would be to have graphic grip of each centerfold with clothes on, and butt naked underneath. That’s what you call flipping the script.

Here are this week’s Berrics videos presented in easily bingeable bites:

Jorge Simoes hangs in there for the pinchiest front crooks yet.

Another Extremely Cheap Skates, this time from world-class baller Sean Malto.

Ivan Monteiro crunches the numbers in “Percentages.”

Dylan Witkin with the fastest fakie flip on record. That’s backwards!

Tom “on the level” Rohrer puts on a flatground clinic.

Chris Chann gambles against the house (us) in Skate Or Dice. Monetize this, Christopher!

What, you thought this wasn’t real?

The Yung Midlenator is a preofessional. Get a recap of his career in his new SOVRN part.
