ALERT: Tony Hawk’s Femur Is Broken

Well, it looks like mild-mannered Tony Hawk isn’t actually Superman after all: He revealed this afternoon that he suffered a nasty break to his femur and will be recovering for a while. It sucks to see the hardest-working man in skatebusiness taken out like that, but we’re sure that he’ll think of a way to make his recovery work for him somehow (maybe his cast will make it into the Smithsonian). In the past few years alone, Hawk has produced a Broadway play; performed on The Masked Singer; debuted an apparel line at Paris Fashion Week; cosplayed as Santa Claus; created his own limited NFT (non-fungible Tony); invested in Animae, Herb & Sea, Market Del Mar, his son Riley’s multi-use concept Steel Mill Coffee in O-side, and GuacAmigos, the OC hideaway he opened with Playmate Nicole Dahm Kelly in 2019; and he was basically skateboarding’s ambassador at the Olympics last year … let’s just say that the list of projects goes on and on. There’s no way he’s just gonna be sitting around playing THPS.
The Birdman shared his thoughts about the injury, below:
“Yesterday sucked. I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback; this recovery for a broken femur will be much harder because of its severity (and my age). But I’m up for the challenge.
“There is a strange irony that this happened on the eve of HBO releasing a trailer for “Until The Wheels Fall Off,” Sam Jones’ documentary about my life & career, which has a strong focus on the philosophy of how I/we do this at our age. The answer is complicated, but ultimately it’s because I have found my sense of purpose and shaped my identity through skating, and it nourishes my mental health immensely. I’ve said many times that I won’t stop skating until I am physically unable. A broken leg—with plenty of hardware—will probably be the biggest test of that creed. I’ll be back… maybe not at full capacity but I resigned to that notion years ago as I approached “mid-life.” Thanks to my unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family – and all of you – for the love and support through the years; I wouldn’t be here without you. See you on the other side.”
