Australia's Keegan Palmer Wins Olympic Men's Park Skateboarding Gold

The last skateboarding event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics happened last night, with Australia’s Keegan Palmer, Brazil’s Pedro Barros, and America’s Cory Juneau taking the top three spots. Palmer’s 95.83 points made him the runaway winner here, reminding the world of why The Berrics featured him in 2018’s Next New Wave series.

Thanks to all of you who have followed our Olympics coverage over the past five years—ever since details about skateboarding in the big show started to trickle down from the information spout in 2016. Our long-running ‘Pushing For Gold’ series introduced you to the skaters of the American team, and we even hosted the U.S. National Championships this year! (This wouldn’t have been possible without support from Got Milk and TikTok, so crack open a cold one and watch some lip syncing videos today.)

We should also mention that, regardless of how you feel about skateboarding in the Olympics, you have to admit that the amount of worldwide interest and exposure generated by the Summer Games was encouraging and even a little bit exciting. If nothing else, it was really cute how all the different mainstream publications tried to cover skating and piggyback off of the Olympics buzz. (When Alexis Sablone skate coached Hoda and Jenna on the Today Show, that was a medal-worthy performance in itself.)

There aren’t very many newspapers left, and when you read The New York Times’ skating coverage you begin to understand why: “Showing off a new wave of aerial acrobatics and risky board-flipping tricks…” Oh, word? Maybe these journalists will watch a couple of Berrics videos and learn some thangs before the next Olympics.
