Gucci wants all of you flossin’ Instagram skate stars to know that they see you. The luxury brand is maybe even a little… inspired by you. And when we say “inspired,” we mean “willing to borrow heavily” from your feeds. (Even Versace Plug isn’t safe.)

Gucci’s latest campaign for the “Gucci Grip” watch (the name is, and we quote, “inspired by the way trainers stick to the grip tape on a skateboard”—huh?) claims to be inspired by ’70s skate culture, but the #GucciGrip lookbook is all over the place. We’re a little confused about how a $1,400+ watch is connected stylistically with ’70s skateboarding (did they even have griptape back then?) but it’s cool that they’re trying. And the Pink Floyd-esque campaign imagery (below) is kinda sick:

Do you see any connection to ’70s skate culture? And, more importantly, would you rock this $1,400+ conversation piece? Here’s the full caption for Gucci’s Instagram post above:

“A culture guided by no rules and free thinkers creates a portrait of inclusion featuring skating communities from seven cities around the world—including New York with skater @tylerbluegolden. All of their stories are tied up by the same accessory, #GucciGrip: the watch with a name inspired by the way trainers stick to the grip tape on a skateboard. Discover more through link in bio.”

Why haven’t Versace tried to ingratiate themselves in skateboarding? They have the perfect hype man in Hyun Kummer (aka Versace Plug). Check out some of his Berrics videos, below:
