NIKE’S ‘DREAM CRAZY’ CAMPAIGN IS A MASSIVE MOMENT FOR SKATEBOARDING

WORDS: Stu Gomez

Nike tweeted its new 2-minute commercial, titled “Dream Crazy,” this afternoon on the occasion of the company’s 30th anniversary of the “Just Do It” campaign. The commercial opens with a familiar face, and it ain’t Colin Kaepernick: it’s Nike SB’s Nyjah Huston. But wait, this isn’t a Nike SB commercial… yet Lacey Baker ALSO makes an appearance.

Several hours after Nike’s tweet, the YouTube upload of "Dream Crazy" was already at a half-million views. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the theme of the campaign being “Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy; ask if they’re crazy enough.” This sentiment especially rings true in skateboarding, and to really punctuate the “insanity” factor the commercial shows many loco Huston handrail bails—honestly, we must be crazy to put ourselves through this mess!

By prominently featuring these two Nike SB heavy hitters, Nike is undoubtedly making a cultural statement that skaters (regardless of core level) can support. This commercial has been highly controversial in the political sphere, for reasons we won’t go into here (suffice it to say, we’re taking a knee), and it has been reported that this ad will air, in its entirety, live during the NFL 2018 season opener tomorrow. We must admit, it gives us a special thrill to think of the millions who will see Lacey Baker rolling around (and Nyjah Huston getting served) as they munch on some wings.

Tune in to tomorrow’s opening game (between the Falcons and the Eagles) at 8:20 EST to experience this incredible cultural moment. Regardless of who you’re rooting for, we all win this time.
