Rob Dyrdek Shares His Business Insights With ‘The Game Plan’ Podcast

Rob Dyrdek‘s list of entrepreneurial accomplishments is long—covering everything from a game-changing contest series to toys—and he recently dropped by Sport Techie‘s podcast ‘The Game Plan’ to share some of his business insights. Now, Dyrdek has always been one of skateboarding’s most endearing figures (you’ve got to be likable to pull off three top-rated MTV series), but in this chat with Jay Kapoor and Tim Katt he takes it to another level by leaning into self-deprecation and playing down his contributions. ”I legitimately landed four or five solid tricks in my entire career and never got past eighth place in a contest,” he says in the interview… but we can think of at least three videos that prove otherwise. NOTE: There is a healthy amount of business-speak in the above interview, containing sentences like “It is a value proposition that can be multiple different products, uncorrelated products, and then I develop two product pre-pivots before we go to market.” Be warned.

Dyrdek is a true idea man, but at least one idea caused a bit of controversy in the six-block radius east of Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles back in the day. When Fantasy Factory aired on MTV in 2009, Dyrdek’s Alien Workshop teammate—and Berrics co-founder—Steve Berra pointed out some suspicious similarities to The Berrics, then in our second official year as a revolutionary digital platform. Berra put Dyrdek on blast for this homage in a ‘Text Yo Self’ episode from October 2009. (Dyrdek’s response? Our ledges were made of wood and his are concrete… umm, nice try, dude.) Revisit that alleyway confrontation, along with Dyrdek’s BATB 1 battle versus our other co-founder Eric Koston, below:
