Skrillex, a longtime Berrics bro from way back, got the chance of a lifetime to compose music for the epic Kingdom Hearts 3, the long-awaited Square Enix/Disney game. The opening theme, “Face My Fears” (a tag team effort with songstress Hikaru Utada), is the manifestation of the deep reverence Skrillex has for the series.
The Verge sat down with Skrillex (also known as Sonny Moore) to learn about his connection to the Kingdom Hearts games, and how he met Utada (appropriately, backstage at a heavy metal festival). Perhaps to highlight how natural it was for Moore to compose music for this beloved series, it all just poured out of him in the studio:
“I’m like, ‘Yo, what if we just tried to write a new song for the game?’… I started with these piano chords, and we wrote it in about an hour.”
