WORDS: Stu Gomez
This morning Sony announced the release of the “Playstation Classic”—a mini console that will include 20 pre-loaded titles from the original PS console’s heyday. The Classic looks a lot like the original, similar controllers and packaging, but only half the size.
All of the launch date games will be playable in their original format, but only five pre-loaded games are official at this time: the ultra-mega-amazing blockbuster RPG Final Fantasy VII;Jumping Flash;Ridge Racer Type 4;Tekken 3; and Wild Arms. That leaves 15 games—the odds are very good that we’ll see something skate-related considering that the 2020 Tokyo Games are creeping up on us.
There are 11 skateboarding-specific games that were released for the original Playstation console. (We reviewed a handful of them here.) They’re not all masterpeices, mind you, but the nostalgia factor will erase a multitude of sins. Here is a list of the 11 potential Playstation Classic skate games:
Rocket Power, 2Xtreme, THPS1, THPS2, THPS2, THPS3, THPS4, Street Sk8er, Street Sk8er 2, Grind Session,* Thrasher Skate and Destroy, and last and probably least… *MTV Skateboarding. (Thanks to Rad Rat for the refresher!)
Skaters of… ahem… a certain age have experienced the joy of playing some of these games when they were first released, but the Sony Playstation Classic might be the best opportunity that the current generation of skaters have for playing these titles.
Here are official images from the Playstation blog. The Playstation Classic is available for pre-order now—release date is Dec. 3 (the console’s 24th anniversary). Get hyped:
