For an unprecedented 10 years, Stefan Janoski‘s ubiquitous Nike SB shoe has reigned supreme. With over 1,500 iterations produced it went from underdog to big dog, maintaining its integrity throughout its history—thanks to Janoski’s stubbornly minimalist design direction. His strong-willed, decisive approach to his shoe may ultimately be the most enduring effect on skate shoe design: placing more trust in the pro’s input might just catch on someday. Janoski got the chance of a lifetime last year when planning for his 10th anniversary celebration. When listing his favorite things, he mentioned the band The Violent Femmes, then he got to meet them. Then he got to record a song with them. Then he got to design a ultra-clean, label-less version of his shoe for them. Then he actually got on stage and performed with them.
