Today we present a very special Visual History Selection, with an emphasis on “history”: Brian Anderson’s epic part in Girl’s Yeah Right! (2003). With over twenty years under his belt as a professional skateboarder, B.A. recently revealed that he is gay. Were skaters horrified to learn of B.A.’s lifestyle? No. Was there a collective gasp in the skate community? Not really.

There was a resounding cheer among skaters worldwide. What better way to demonstrate the inclusivity of skateboarding—the pride and togetherness that’s threaded through everything we do—than to celebrate our diversity? After all, one of the most outstanding traits in skateboarding is our culture of support. It’s evident in everything we do, from our progression of the actual “physical” elements of skating to how we share our footage and promote each other.

The skateboarding world’s reaction to B.A.’s revelation was a warm reminder that we really are linked in some deep way that can’t be intellectualized or sold. We all share something unshakeable that takes the act of one of our Pros coming out of the closet from being an agonizing experience and turns it into a bonding experience. It’s all love, and it is so reaffirming to see that we are all practicing what we preach.
