VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS GET SKATEBOARDING LESSON IN CALGARY, ALBERTA
Academy Skateboard Collective is a school in Canada that uses skateboarding as a way to connect its community. A recent lesson went above and beyond what you would think of as skate curriculum by teaching visually impaired students how to skate.
This may sound counter-intuitive, but visually impaired skaters like Dan Mancina have been finding ways to enjoy what they love—even with this notable physical obstacle. Mancina, who had lost his sight as a result of a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, was on hand during the class to give his own tried-and-true tips.
In the video released this afternoon by The Calgary Herald, ASC instructor Everett Tetz says of the lesson: “The overall message is resilience and not giving up especially when you’re faced with challenges. Just showing parents and students that this is an available option.”
