NEW BATTLE ROYALE ‘APEX LEGENDS’ MAY BE A ‘FORTNITE’ KILLER
This afternoon, Respawn Studios revealed their game Apex Legends. The battle royale title is an extension of the studio’s Titanfall series, but without the mechs, apparently. And, best of all, the game is (drum roll) FREE! Apex Legends is available to download on XBox One, PS4, and PC today.
Respawn’s live reveal event featured behind-the-scenes interviews with the developers and gameplay, in addition to the trailer which will make you drool (if you’re into that sort of thing). As far as gameplay, it seems like squads are trios as opposed to duos or 4-person teams, and each squad member has its own class with its own special abilities. And you can respawn, which has been pretty much unheard of in this survival genre (there’s a beacon where you can revive your squadmates).
Could this be a Fortnite killer? Fortnite launched 1 year and a half ago, single-handedly revolutionizing the battle royale genre. Several games swooped in over the past year to make a dent in BR market, but Fortnite has been unstoppable, aided by Epic Studio’s pattern of constant updates and limited time offerings. (Not aided by absurd bloom and run & gun, which have driven countless players away from the title.) From the gameplay we’ve seen on Twitch and Mixer, this game is going to give Fortnite (also a free game) a run for its money.
