Here’s How Skateistan Handled The Many Challenges Of 2020

Skateistan, the nonprofit featured in 2020’s Oscar-winning short subject doc Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl), has shared an update on how its schools and programs have coped with the many challenges presented last year. Of course, the year started off great with that Academy Award recognition, but shortly afterwards the global pandemic made it necessary to close the doors at all four schools—and halt construction at Bamyan in Kabul, the fifth skate school (third in Afghanistan) which will accommodate up to 800 kids a week. As it got closer to the end of summer, Skateistan implemented classes outdoors and followed COVID-19 safety protocol to the letter; things are looking up, but we’re not out of the woods yet. Check out the latest Skateistan update, above.

Safe spaces are so necessary, perhaps now more than ever, and Skateistan is meeting the need. Visit the nonprofit’s site if you would like to help support these efforts.
